Precautions for Using Optoelectronic Switches

Optical sensors can be used in a wide range of applications. Additionally, when deploying optical sensors, it’s important to consider environmental conditions to ensure they operate reliably and effectively.

Optical switches can be used in a wide variety of applications. Additionally, when deploying optical switches, it’s important to consider environmental conditions to ensure they operate reliably and effectively. (1) Important Notes:

① Avoid strong light sources

Optical sensors generally operate reliably under conditions of high ambient illumination. However, care should be taken to avoid pointing the sensor's optical axis directly at strong light sources such as sunlight or incandescent lamps. If it’s impossible to adjust the angle between the sensor (receiver) optical axis and the strong light source, consider installing a shading shield around the sensor or equipping it with a light-blocking sleeve.

② Avoid mutual interference

A more effective way to avoid mutual interference is to alternate the placement of transmitters and receivers, and when using more than two sets, increase the spacing between them. Of course, employing devices operating on different frequencies is also an excellent approach.

③ Influence of Mirror Angle

When the object being tested is glossy or encounters a lubricated metal surface, its ordinary reflectivity is very high, often behaving almost like a mirror. In such cases, the illuminator should be positioned at an angle of 10–20° relative to the detection object, ensuring that its optical axis isn’t perpendicular to the surface. This adjustment helps prevent false triggering.

 

 

④ Eliminate interference from background objects

When using reflective diffuse-type transmitters and receivers, the photoelectric switch may fail to detect reliably if the target object is too close to the background—or if the background itself, such as a lubricated surface with high reflectivity—interferes with the detection process.

Therefore, it becomes possible to switch to interval-limited transmitters and receivers, or alternatively eliminate the background entirely by moving the sensor away from it, removing the background altogether, painting the background in matte black, or deliberately making the background rough and dull.

⑤ Self-diagnosis function application

During installation or operation, minor optical axis shifts, lens contamination, dust accumulation, external noise, and environmental temperature deviations—often caused by factors like the surface or background conditions, as well as operational vibrations—may occasionally occur. These issues can potentially push the photoelectric switch out of its stable operating range. Fortunately, the switch is equipped with a self-diagnostic feature that triggers the STABILITY green indicator light to alert the user, signaling the need for immediate adjustment.

⑥ Eliminate countertop influence

When the illuminator and receiver are installed close to the tabletop, they may pick up localized light beams reflected off the surface, leading to operational instability. To address this issue, position the receiver and illuminator at a slight distance above the tabletop and install a light shield to prevent unwanted reflections from reaching the receiver.

Absolutely no use of thinners or other chemicals to avoid damaging the plastic mirror.

Wiring for high-voltage lines, power cables, and photoelectric sensors should not be placed in the same conduit or cable tray. Otherwise, electromagnetic induction could cause (sometimes) false operations or even damage to the photoelectric switches. Therefore, as a general rule, these wires should be routed separately.
